Rene Russo grew up in Burbank. Her parents are Nino Russo and Shirley Balocca. Shirley is a barmaid. Her father, a mechanical engineer and sculptor, left her family around the age of two. The mother of the child raised Rene and her sister Toni by herself. The parents of her mother and father were both of Italian, German, English and Irish origin. Rene's scoliosis was so severe that she was required to wear a full torso-brace during her Junior High School years. Rene was already a tall girl, which led to her being given the nickname Jolly Green Giant from her classmates. Despite having removed her brace Ron Howard was still one of the few females in the classes. Rene was unable to handle academics as well as the social aspect of high school. She dropped out in the tenth grade. To make ends meet, Rene took a series of work-study jobs over up to 18 months. Many were free. She sold refreshments at the movie theater, where she could see free films, worked as a restaurant hostess, where meals were for free. She also was a cashier in a shop at Disneyland in which she was granted access to free tickets. She would often work two jobs at the simultaneously. The only job she was paid for was in an optical facility in charge in examining the contact lenses.
